So the very fruitful un-retirement of Steven Soderbergh continues with the trailer for his latest movie, Unsane. Which will be releases across UK cinemas 23rd March 2018. The film stars Claire Foy as a woman so terrified of her stalker that she sees him wherever she goes. This leads to her commitment to an institution from which she can’t escape.
The tone of the trailer suggests intense psychological horror, with a hint of mystery. Is her incarceration some kind of a conspiracy? And was that a mention of a dead body? Clearly something is afoot!
Unsane looks to be worlds away from Soderbergh’s first comeback film, the pure popcorn rush Lucky Logan. But that shouldn’t come as any kind of a surprise. After all, this is the Soderbergh that brought us Kafka, Schizopolis, and The Limey, which, lest we forget, was released between the excellent, but somewhat more mainstream, Out of Sight and Erin Brockovich. It’s good to know his passion for such thrillingly individual material remains intact.
Alongside Foy, who you may recognise as the young Queen Elizabeth II from The Crown, the film stars Joshua Leonard, who first appeared on screen in The Blair With Project back in ’99, Jay Pharoah, Juno Temple, Aimee Mullins, who recently appeared in Stranger Things, and Amy Irving, who starred in Brian De Palma’s Carrie and The Fury back to back. Am I noticing a trend here? Some of these performers have serious horror pedigree, which adds just another layer of anticipation to one of the more exciting releases of the year.
