From director Josh Boone, The New Mutants certainly seems to be a change of tone for the X-Men series, as well as Boone, whose previous movie was the teen friendly heart-breaker The Fault in Our Stars.
The trailer shows a bunch of kids in a grim looking medical facility being treated and tested because of their mutant abilities. ‘This isn’t a hospital, it’s a haunted house,’ says the voice over, and then we’re treated to glimpses of the horror the movie contains – there’s screaming, hands appearing out of nowhere, creepy masks and faces pushing through walls. By the looks of it this movie should appeal as much to fans of the Saw and The Conjuring franchises as to X-Men fans.
Will this radical change in style reinvigorate the X-Men franchise as Logan did earlier this year? Only time will tell. But with a cast of promising young stars including Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Anya-Taylor Joy (The Witch and Split) and Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), It surely stands a chance.
Director Josh Boone has stated that The New Mutants was influenced by A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors. This is certainly evident in the newly released poster show below.
The New Mutants will be released April 13th 2018.
