Good news for fans of salacious crime stories, as Amazon have just given the green-light to Lorena, a four-part documentary series focusing on the case of Lorena Bobbitt, who removed her husbands penis with a kitchen knife in 1993 (thankfully it was re-attached). This Prime Original series will be executive produced by Jordan Peele, currently red-hot after winning an oscar for the sci-fi horror comedy Get Out, and directed by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Joshua Rofé (Lost for Life).
According to Amazon Lorena, “will reveal the hidden truths in the notorious case of John Wayne and Lorena Bobbitt and challenge the long-held narrative that surrounded the event.” 25 years after the fact Lorena is planned as a re-investigation of the deep moral issues and painful human tragedies buried at the heart of this infamous American scandal, which could be seen as a lost opportunity for a serious discussion on domestic and sexual assault in America.
Director Joshua Rofé elaborates. “Our hope for this series is to give viewers pause when the next scandal of the moment is presented to us as macabre entertainment. Often, there’s profound pain and trauma just beneath the surface of stories like Lorena’s.”
“When we hear the name ‘Bobbitt’ we think of one of the most sensational incidents to ever be catapulted into a full blown media spectacle. With this project, Lorena has a platform to tell her truth as well as engage in a critical conversation about gender dynamics, abuse, and her demand for justice. This is Lorena’s story and we’re honoured to help her tell it,” said Jordan Peele.
This certainly seems like it could be a fascinating re-evaluation of a tabloid sensation, that deserved a more intelligent commentary at the time. When one considers the current climate in relation to gender politics, it’s hard to imagine a more appropriate time for this documentary to go into production. And with a creative team of this calibre there’s no doubt that Lorena is one to look forward to. Albeit with a slightly queazy reluctance from us men.
